Design Solutions to Reflect Your Lifestyle

Perched in the Sunshine Coast Hinterland, ‘Project Palmview’ delicately balances climatic design, with executive and multi-generational living. The owners of Project Palmview looked to VHD Studio to create a home where their large family could come together and enjoy uninterrupted views of the coast in a building sculpted to reflect modern design trends.
The sight slopes down from the street and there are extensive views to the east towards the coast from the upper floor. Accordingly, the dwelling needed to be as close to the street as possible to ensure the RL of the upper floor remained high enough to see over the roof of the neighbouring dwelling. A sawtooth roof design allows for natural light from the east to access the depth of the dwelling via high level windows. The roof plan is punctured with numerous skylights to retain the light feel.
The client required most daily living spaces to be on the upper floor, allowing for minimal energy usage – both human and from the grid – when the lower floor is unoccupied. A lift was installed to allow for aged access. The upper floor single level style dwelling radiates around a central void over the great room on the lower floor. Access to the private parts of the upper floor are via bridge hallways. The main open living areas are on the eastern side off the upper floor, with access onto a huge outdoor living area. The Master suite features raked ceiling and high-level glazing, accompanied by feature skylights.
The lower floor features a generous great room – media room, guest rooms, 3 bay garage, gym, flexible outdoor living and horizon edge pool. The standout feature of the dwelling is an activated open living space, running the full width off the eastern facade. Raked ceilings with lowered bulkhead create differentiation between shared spaces. Wide open doorways retract to blend the internal and external. Light and air billows in from all directions with the west blocked by the remaining dwelling. The open framed stairs and lift both open onto the upper floor entry at the top of the bridge.
The 2-story building has a refined facade that carefully balances the two pavilions on either side of the central void. The building line steps forwards and backwards across its length to create opportunities for corner glazing for glimpses of the view from the western pavilion. The external living area soars over the garage pinned to the earth via stone clad columns and a soaring timber ceiling to the roof plan. The northern external living spaces feature indoor/outdoor spaces, and a horizon edged pool.
