2022 in Review
We are excited about the official launch of our fresh new website. Of course, a new website means a new BLOG feature! So, as we approach the end of 2022, I thought I might share a quick review of the year that was.

Industry recognition
The highlight of 2022 would have to be the recognition we received at the Building Design Queensland Design Awards. VHD Studio were successful recipients at the South West Regional Design Awards in July, taking out:
- Commercial Interiors – 171 Hume Street,
- Peter Modini Memorial Award – New Commercial Buildings up to $5M – 131 Margaret Street, and;
- Industrial Building Design – Boomaroo Nurseries (Southbrook).
During September, we attended the State Design Awards, held at HOTO on the Gold Coast, where we were proud recipients of;
- Commercial Interiors – 171 Hume Street,
- Peter Modini Memorial Award – New Commercial Buildings up to $5M – 131 Margaret Street, and;
- 2022 Commercial Design of the Year – 131 Margaret Street (the icing on the cake!)
Our Team
During April, I was invited to present at the Brisbane Home Show on behalf of Building Design Queensland on the topic of ‘How to brief your Design Professional’.
Our intrepid Building Designer and Revit Superstar, Jordon Waters, and his lovely wife, Sarah, have spent the year renovating their home in anticipation of adding baby Waters to their family early next year. We wish them both well and we are enjoying sharing the journey!
Senior Building and Interior Designer, Alana McMurrary has continued to deliver great outcomes for both our new and established clients across the full spectrum of Commercial, Educational, Industrial and Residential projects.
Our Clients
VHD Studio continued to establish themselves as go-to consultants across a range of D&C projects delivered under the management of major Tier 1 and 2 Building Contractors. We look forward to the completion of numerous major projects over the next few months, including the recently completed Automatic Retrieval Store and under construction Value-Add Development at one of the region’s major abattoirs, along with a 4 storey residential complex in the heart of Toowoomba.
Educational design grew as part of VHD Studio core areas of expertise in 2022, delivering DA Documentation for numerous Early Childhood Centres. Our partnership with St Joseph’s College continued to grow with construction of the Fogarty Building renovation being undertaken over the coming Christmas period and the addition to the Mary Rice Building due to begin in 2023.
Major Residential projects remain a focus for the team, with the completion of numerous statement dwellings across the Toowoomba region.
Illustrations have always been a mainstay of a designers skill set to express the intent of their work clearly to our clients. VHD Studio added Lumion software to its repertoire, allowing us to produce high quality rendered images in an efficient timeframe.
Recognising the increase in demand for our services, VHD Studio expanded our team through the solidification of our relationships with trusted sub-contractors and the expansion of our premises to include additional flexible meeting space.
2023
The team at VHD Studio look forward to welcoming new clients and continuing working with our established clients, creating new projects, along with all of the challenges they entail, as well as continuing to grow our skillset.
Cheers,
Craig van Heerden
